St. Basil the Great Icon

Writing is in Old Greek.

About the Saint: St. Basil is one of the Cappadocian Fathers, (along with Gregory Nazianzus, and Basil's brother Gregory of Nyssa). Together with Gregory of Nazianzus and John Chrysostom, they are titled the Three Great Hierarchs. He is also referred to as "the revealer of heavenly mysteries" (Ouranophantor).

St. Basil established guidelines for monastic life which focus on community life, liturgical prayer and manual labor. Together with Saint Pachomius he is remembered as a father of communal monasticism in Eastern Christianity.

His feast day is commemorated on Jan 1/14.
